The most important rule for a Tadoba trip is simple: stay near the gate you have booked. Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve has 22 safari gates spread around a large forest. From Chandrapur, for example, Moharli gate is about 35 km away while Kolara gate is about 110 km away, on the opposite side of the reserve. Morning safaris start as early as 5:30 AM, and a resort near the wrong gate can mean a two-hour drive in the dark.

This guide explains which area to stay in for each gate, how to check that a resort follows the reserve's conservation rules, and what to ask before you book. For safari booking, gates and rules, see our Tadoba safari guide.

Plan in this order (as the reserve itself recommends)

  1. Book your safari on the official website and note the exact gate.
  2. Book a stay near that gate.
  3. Arrange transport between your stay and the gate for every safari.
  4. Then book your travel to Nagpur or Chandrapur.

Book only greenlisted stays

The reserve publishes a list of conservation-compliant resorts and homestays on its official website. These properties have complied with forest and wildlife conservation norms, and the reserve asks visitors to book only at these greenlisted places.

The list currently has around 50 properties. They range from small homestays with 2 to 5 rooms to larger resorts, and include government-run options such as the MTDC (Maharashtra Tourism) resort and two properties run by the Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM). Each entry shows the number of rooms and, for most, a phone number, email or website.

See the full list on the official website: mytadoba.mahaforest.gov.in/wheretostay. Before booking anything, check that the name is on it.

Choosing a greenlisted stay matters. Tadoba's tigers regularly move outside the reserve into the surrounding villages and farmland, and properties that ignore conservation norms add pressure on that shared habitat.

Where to stay for each gate: overview

The official website groups the 22 gates into four zones. Pick your area by zone, then check the exact gate.

Zone Where to stay Nearest city
MoharliMoharli and nearby villages, the largest choice of staysChandrapur
KolaraAround Kolara gate, Chimur talukaNagpur
NavegaonClose to Navegaon gate, Chimur talukaCheck the drive from Nagpur or Chandrapur
Pangdi & ZariFew stays nearby; check the drive time carefullyChandrapur

Moharli zone

Gates: Moharli and Khutwanda (core); Agarzari, Dewada-Adegaon and Junona (buffer).

Moharli is the most popular core gate and has the largest cluster of places to stay, in and around Moharli village. It is also the most convenient zone to reach from Chandrapur, about 35 km to Moharli gate. That makes it the easiest choice for a first visit, especially if you arrive by train.

Khutwanda is a separate core gate in the same zone. If your safari is from Khutwanda, check the drive time from your stay to that gate specifically, not just to Moharli.

Kolara zone

Gates: Kolara (core); Kolara Chauradeo, Madnapur, Belara, Alizanza, Shirkada and Palasgaon (buffer).

Kolara is on the northern side of the reserve in Chimur taluka. At roughly 110 to 120 km, it is the closest core gate to Nagpur, which makes it the natural choice if you fly into Nagpur. It is often described as quieter than Moharli.

This zone has six buffer gates spread over a wide area. If your safari is at a buffer gate such as Alizanza or Belara, look for a stay close to that particular gate.

Gates: Navegaon (core); Navegaon Ramdegi and Nimdela (buffer).

Navegaon is often described as one of the quieter core gates, with fewer stays around it than Moharli. Like Kolara, it is in Chimur taluka.

Pangdi and Zari zone

Gates: Pangdi and Zari (core); Pangdi Aswal Chuha, Keslaghat, Zari Peth, Mamla and Somnath (buffer).

These gates see fewer visitors, and there are fewer places to stay close to them. Zari gate is about 50 km from Chandrapur. Before booking, open the gate's Google Maps link on the official website and check the drive time from your stay. Plan to reach the gate well before entry time: late entry is not allowed.

Staying in Chandrapur or Nagpur

For a relaxed trip with two or more safaris, staying near the gate is worth it. You get more sleep, you can return to rest between the morning and evening safaris, and you are less likely to miss your entry time.

What to ask before you book

  1. Is the property on the official greenlist? Check the name on the official website.
  2. How long is the drive to my exact gate? Ask for the drive time to your booked gate, not to "Tadoba". A resort can be near one gate and far from another in the same zone.
  3. Will you arrange transport for the safari? Ask how you will reach the gate for each safari and what it costs. Taxis are hard to find in villages before dawn.
  4. Does the resort run its own safari vehicle? Under the reserve's rules, a resort vehicle may skip the gate's rotation system only if it pays the owner of the gypsy whose turn it takes, plus ₹1,000 to the Tiger Reserve Foundation. Ask whether these extra charges are included.
  5. What is the cancellation policy? Your safari permit and your stay are separate bookings with separate rules. Cancelling one does not cancel the other.
  6. What food is available? Most stays near the gates are in villages far from restaurants, so check whether meals are included. Remember that alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not allowed inside the reserve itself.

Book safari permits only on the official website. Some resorts offer to book safaris for you. That is fine, but the permit must come from the official booking system, and the reserve warns visitors not to pay extra above the official rates. You can always book the safari yourself and book only the room from the resort.

Frequently asked questions

Which gate area has the most places to stay?

Moharli. It has the largest cluster of resorts and homestays, including the government-run MTDC resort, and it is the easiest area to reach from Chandrapur.

Where should I stay if I fly into Nagpur?

Kolara is the closest core gate to Nagpur, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road. Book a Kolara safari and stay near Kolara gate.

Are there homestays near Tadoba?

Yes. The official greenlist includes homestays and small properties with only a few rooms alongside larger resorts.

Is it safe to stay in villages around Tadoba?

Yes, thousands of visitors do every year, but remember that tigers and leopards move through the area outside the reserve too. Follow the property's advice. Avoid walking on village roads or fields after dark, and never go into the forest on foot.

When should I book my stay?

As soon as your safari is confirmed. Rooms near popular gates fill up quickly on weekends, during the summer peak season and over winter holidays. See our guide to the best time to visit Tadoba.
