Your KUA Directions

    Unlocking Your Birth Date Numerology

While name numerology works with the letters of your name, birth date numerology works with the digits of the day you were born, which numerologists believe carry particular traits. From those digits we work out three core numbers and arrange them, together with the digits themselves, in the classical 3x3 framework known as the Lo Shu Grid.

Type your date of birth above (or pick it from the calendar) and choose male or female for the KUA number. The numbers, the grid and the working below update instantly.

How Your Core Numbers Are Calculated

Here is the step-by-step working for a male born on August 15, 1990 (15-08-1990) (an example; it changes to your own date as soon as you enter one above):

    • Mulank (Driver / Psychic Number): Extracted strictly from your day of birth (15). In numerology, this number is said to shape your immediate nature, outward behaviour and daily interactions.
      Calculation: 1 + 5 = 6
    • Bhagyank (Destiny / Conductor Number): Derived by summing every digit of your complete birth date. It is read as a sign of your broader life path.
      Calculation: 1 + 5 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 33 → 3 + 3 = 6
    • KUA Number: A concept originating from Ba Zhai Feng Shui that utilizes your birth year (1990) and biological sex to determine favorable spatial directions for success and wellness.
      Step 1 (Sum the year): 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
      Step 2 (Male Formula): Subtract the sum from 11 (11 - 1 = 10) → 1 + 0 = 1

Summing all four digits of the year works for births in both the 1900s and the 2000s, and gives the same KUA as the older "last two digits" formula, which needs a different rule for each century.

    Interpreting the 3x3 Grid

The Lo Shu chart is a historical Chinese magic square containing nine distinct slots: every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15. Chinese legend says the pattern was first seen on the shell of a turtle that came out of the Luo River. By inserting your birth digits and your calculated core numbers into their designated boxes, you get a visual map of your chart, and the calculator lists what it shows under the grid:

    • Repeated numbers: Digits appearing more than once in a single box (e.g., "11" or "99") are traditionally read as a stronger dose of that number's traits.
    • Missing numbers: An empty box is read as an area of life that needs conscious development. For instance, a missing 4 is often linked with working harder on stability and managing money. When a whole row, column or diagonal is empty, some numerologists call it an "arrow of weakness".

    What Each Box Represents

The Lo Shu square comes from Chinese tradition, where each of its nine numbers is linked to a compass direction and one of the five elements. The grid is drawn with south at the top, which is why 9 (south) sits in the top middle and 1 (north) at the bottom. Feng Shui also links each direction to an area of life:

Box Direction and element Area of life (Feng Shui)
    4South-east, WoodWealth
    9South, FireFame and reputation
    2South-west, EarthLove and relationships
    3East, WoodFamily and health
    5Centre, EarthBalance (no direction)
    7West, MetalChildren and creativity
    8North-east, EarthKnowledge and self-development
    1North, WaterCareer
    6North-west, MetalHelpful people and travel

Indian numerology also links each number to a planet: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn and 9 Mars. Our numerology guide lists the personality traits tradition gives each number.

    Reading Rows and Columns (Planes)

Many Indian numerologists also read the grid line by line. When all three boxes of a row or column are filled, that "plane" is considered strong; when all three are empty, it is treated as an area to work on. The names vary from one numerologist to another, but the most common are:

    • Rows: mind plane (4-9-2), emotional plane (3-5-7) and practical plane (8-1-6).
    • Columns: thought plane (4-3-8), will plane (9-5-1) and action plane (2-7-6).
    • Diagonals: 4-5-6 and 2-5-8 are read too, under names that differ from one book to another.

The calculator lists your complete and empty lines under the grid.

KUA Number and Your Favourable Directions

In Eight Mansions (Ba Zhai) Feng Shui, KUA numbers fall into two groups. KUA 1, 3, 4 and 9 form the East group, whose favourable directions are north, south, east and south-east. KUA 2, 6, 7 and 8 form the West group, whose favourable directions are west, north-west, south-west and north-east. Each KUA gives its four directions different roles: success (Sheng Qi), health (Tian Yi), relationships (Yan Nian) and personal growth (Fu Wei). The other group's four directions are traditionally avoided.

KUA Group Success, health, relationships, personal growth
    1EastSouth-east, East, South, North
    2WestNorth-east, West, North-west, South-west
    3EastSouth, North, South-east, East
    4EastNorth, South, East, South-east
    6WestWest, North-east, South-west, North-west
    7WestNorth-west, South-west, North-east, West
    8WestSouth-west, North-west, West, North-east
    9EastEast, South-east, North, South

Feng Shui practitioners use these directions for things like the way you face while working or where your head points while you sleep. There is no KUA 5 in the table because of the rule of 5 below.

The Feng Shui Rule of 5

In KUA mathematics, the center number 5 has no specific geographical direction assigned to it. Therefore, if a calculation resolves precisely to a 5, tradition dictates an automatic shift: males adopt a KUA of 2, while females adopt a KUA of 8. For example, a woman born in 1990 gets 1 + 4 = 5, so her KUA becomes 8.

Why Other Calculators May Show a Different Grid

    • Which numbers are added: this calculator places your birth-date digits (zeros are left out) plus the Mulank, Bhagyank and KUA. Some numerologists place only the birth-date digits, Mulank and Bhagyank, and leave the KUA out.
    • Birthdays from the 1st to the 9th: your day digit and your Mulank are then the same number, so it appears twice in this grid. Some numerologists count it only once.
    • January and early February births: Feng Shui traditionally follows the Chinese solar year, which starts around 4 February. If you were born before that, a Feng Shui consultant may use the previous year and get a different KUA. Like most Indian Lo Shu charts, this calculator uses the calendar year as written.
    • Western birth charts: Pythagorean numerology arranges its 3x3 chart differently (3-6-9 on top, 2-5-8 in the middle, 1-4-7 at the bottom), so it will not match a Lo Shu grid.

    A Balanced View

Numerology and Feng Shui are traditional belief systems, not sciences. There is no scientific evidence that birth-date numbers predict personality or luck, and different schools give different answers for the same date. Many people enjoy them as a cultural tradition or a prompt for self-reflection, and that is how we suggest using this calculator: not as the basis for decisions about careers, marriage, health, money or property.
